Languedoc and Roussillon

The Languedoc and Rousillon region of France is known for its long golden beaches and seemingly endless sunshine, but it offers so much more too. To the North is the Camargue, over 360 sq. miles of protected land, which is home to more than 400 species of birds, as well flamingoes, black bears and the Camargue horse.

The south of the region offers a cities such as Perpignan, with its palm-lined promenades and vibrant painted houses and Collioure a Meditearanen town just a few kiloimeters from the Spanish border, providing strong Catalan influences in this area of France.

If you wanted to explore inland, Carcassonne is an ideal day out, complete with medieval castle which looks as if it has been lifted out of the pages of a fairytale book.

The food in this area includes regional specialities such as Cargolade, a deliacy of snails grilled on the embers of vine shoots and traditionally cooked at Easter and Boles de Picolat, which can be lamb, beef or pork cooked in a sauce of tomato and green olives.
