Portugal, or the Portuguese Republic, to give it the official name, is located in southwestern Europe and is becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination.

Being one of the warmest European countries, Portugal is ideal if you are a sun worshipper and your ideal holiday is relaxing by a sun-kissed pool topping up your tan. That being said, there is plenty to see in the country and it has a wealth of cultural and historical interest.

Of course, a Portugal holiday is also renowned for its lovely beaches laden with hidden coves and its fishing ports are noted for their fresh fish. Its main river, the River Tagus, divides mainland Portugal and you will see everything from plateaus created by river valleys to rolling plains and mountainous regions in the north.

Located in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, you will also find the islands of the Azores, which are definitely worth exploring, whilst the Madeira Islands which were formed by the activity of an in-plate hotspot, are also worth a closer look.
