This bizarre event dates back to 1290 where participants liven up proceedings by “baptizing” each other in wine, involving some 5,000 participants wearing white T-shirts until they turn a deep shade of purple. Around 20,000 litres of wine are thrown around and anyone is fair game even television camera crews! When the supplies of ammunition have dwindled the festivities carry on into the night with dancing, fireworks and general merriment.

This unusual festival gives visitors the opportunity to taste wine from the first pressing and enjoy colourful processions packed with fruit and flowers. The highlight however, is the Noche de Zurra where the public take to the streets to pray for water to aid the harvest. Their neighbours respond in kind with hoses and buckets of water when a playful waterfight ensues.

The Vogalonga is a rowing race that began in 1975 and takes place in St Mark's Basin. Over 50 Venetian rowing clubs take part, as well as people from all over the world; in the past these have included a Chinese crew in a dragon boat, Oxford and Cambridge rowing crews in straw boaters, and a local resident who has twice swam the entire course of the race!

The last Venetian regatta of the season takes place around the island of Burano which you can reach from Venice via a pleasant boat trip. Why not make a day of it and take in the beautiful nearby island of Murano too?
The regatta is visible from land (particularly from the ferry point on Burano), allowing you to take in the wonderful views of gondolas and mascarete with ease.
