Pistoia Zoo is a nice day out for the family. It is a little over 70 km away but you will be greeted by lion enclosures, happy hippos and many other large animals. Children can get up close to some smaller animals and even help to feed them.

A visit to the small village of San Gimignano is highly recommended (it is best to go later in the day when all the day-trippers have left). It looks much the same as it did in the 14th century, with old streets, charming squares and medieval towers.
This parc is situated close to many of the famous Chianti towns, as well as some of the region’s most elegant and cultural cities. The parc owners organise lots of low cost excursions to Rome, Pisa, Florence and Siena, and even run a free bus service into Figline.
If you want to swing through the trees then there is a treetop adventure park nearby in Fiesole called Parco Avventura Vincigliata. It is suitable for all ages thanks to the variety of courses.
Florence is one of the highlights of the area. It is only 29 miles away and easy to get to on a bus or train. The city has a wealth of Renaissance paintings, churches and squares, and it is of course home to ‘Accedemia’ which holds Michelangelo’s ‘David’. It also has the delights of the medieval Pont Vecchio, a bridge lined with shops selling gold.
Figline Valdarno is an excellent base for exploring because it has a train station and bus depot with good routes to the nearby towns and cities. It also has its own interesting features including lots of churches, abbeys and monasteries, which you can discover on the town’s historic trails.
