Start your holiday...
Noirmoutier is an island just off the coast of Vendée which has all you could wish for, including a traditional port, a 12th century castle, beaches and shopping. The island is accessed via the bridge or the causeway which extends for 3 miles, known as ‘Passage du Gois’, but be quick, if the tide comes in it can be covered in 4 metres of water!
Pack a picnic and head to Apremeont for a day of varied excitement and stunning scenery. You can hire a pedalo, take a dip in a freshwater lake, or visit Château d’Apremont. The château offers breathtaking panoramic views from its towers that are not to be missed.
If more action is required then Feeling Forest or Oceanile are what you are looking for! Feeling Forest is an aerial assault course but also has trampolines, air games and other activities to keep everybody entertained. It is suitable for ages six and over but some height restrictions do apply. Oceanile is a water park at Noirmoutier with slides, rapids, inflatables and a wave pool for thrills and spills! Atlantic Toboggan water park is also close by for the family to make a splash.
Ile aux Papillon is a wonderful, technicolour experience. It is the home of 700 butterflies of all shapes and sizes, which flutter around you and maybe even rest on your collar as you walk through the greenhouse and learn all about the life cycle of the creatures.
Another excellent way to spend a day is exploring the labyrinth of ancient marshlands – take a canoe along ‘la route du sel’ to discover the Vendée’s salt mining history.
If this trip leaves you wanting to see more of France’s beautiful scenery then one of the most beautiful spots is l’Ile d’Yeu. There are ferries from Fromentine and St Gilles-Croix-de-Vie. You can see the amazing views of wild and wonderful moors or out along the coast on walking or cycling tours, staring out from the gorgeous beaches or from the striking Vieux Château. From here Port Joinville is a great place for a bite to eat.
