I had never been to this area before but would return wonderful mountains and valleys, with a stronge local tradition of good food and real French experience. Although the ardeche river was busy is worth a paddle down and swim in.

The Ardeche is beautiful and has great weather. We loved canoeing and some of our group also enjoyed some rock climbing using a local guide. The cave paintings at Vallon shouldn't be missed but in peak season it is worth booking online from the UK to guarantee the time of day you want. It is also worth investigating canoeing rivers other than the ardeche if you want to escape the crowds.

There's so much to do in this spectacular region it is hard to know where to start...highlights were the reconstructed Chauvet Cavern (extremely good and we ended up spending a whole day there); canoe trip down the ardeche gorge with Kanoyak (who are certified river guides and tak children under 6 yrs old in their canoe); Aven d'Orgnac cave and prehistory site (fire making and flint knapping demonstrations were highlights for our kids), amongst others.
