A beautiful and interesting part of France. Love the closeness of the mountains and the sea.

It's a lovely region which is why we went there as have been there before but from this particular site, everywhere was about an hour away which felt a bit of schlep when you just want to pop to a nice town for a wander to break up the day.

We know this part of France very well with both of us having been to the area when we were young and now we are the parents! Typical western France really - lots of cycle routes and very flat, great sandy beaches and la palmyre is very safe, lots of restaurants and shops and a real holiday resort feel. It is busy during peak season but not overwhelming so. We went to the zoo in La Palymre which is certainly packed full of animals however it is a little depressing as many of the cages are smaller than we'd expect and you are encouraged to feed the animals toffee popcorn! This surely can't be good for them. It also hasn't really changed since I last went in 1990. Saintes is a lovely town with nice parks and plenty of history. La Rochelle is great too just not so good for really little ones, trying to find suitable places to eat was hard and the aquarium on a busy day was not great once again for our 4yr old and 1yr old - certainly didn't live up to its billing. Didn't see any nightlife due to having little kids but we could certainly hear it at night. Ronce-les-bains 15mins by car up the coast was a great little place with nice little shops and really good restaurants that cater well for kids - on that point we found a real lack of high chairs in restaurants which is surprising as in the past we've always found the French to cater well for kids but not this time.
