Milton Keynes
We visited Malcesine and went on the cable car which gave brilliant views from Monte Baldo. We went after 4pm and the price is a bit lower but would have liked longer to walk more and explore but this was good value.
The scenery is beautiful and the sunsets have to be seen!
Many of the towns are suitable for tourists and have nice restaurants and places to visit.
A car is essential for getting around the lake and getting out to visit the local attractions.
The traffic was quite bad on most days as there is 1 main road round the south of the lake. I think the traffic was due to the theme parks so we just changed our plans and explored in the other direction when it was worse!

Ruislip, London
Great on lake activities, fantastic restaurants at decent prices, amazing scenery and history
Very heavy traffic and massive queues at Monte Baldo cable car meant we missed out!
Also huge queue at Caneva water park ride crazy river... If you go to Caneva make sure you do that ride first... The traffic made us not explore the eastern side of the lake

Bangor (Northern Ireland)
So many beautiful places to see it was hard to decide where to go! Every small town has so much history and charm and character (as well as restaurants and ice cream shops). We made a special effort to go to Verona and Venice and were not disappointed. And yes it is possible to drive to Venice!
Driving in Italy is not for the faint-hearted. You have to be so vigilant at all times. It takes a while to get used to the pedestrian crossings which are not clearly marked and people just step out confidently in front of you. The motorbikes and scooters just seem to weave in and out of traffic and assume you will give way to them. So with care a hire car gives you so much more flexibility and can save you a lot of money.

Lovely Scenery, great weather, food (pasta, fish, pizza and ice-cream!) and wine! Lots to do for families - water park, theme park, lots of lovely towns to visit. Friendly local people.
Mosquitos - but only really bad at the caravan park. not bad in villages.

Northwich/ Cheshire
Great scenery - boating on the lake - little villages and exploring the mountain views also with the knowledge that there are theme parks close by to add value to a family holiday and keep everyone satisfied. Museums free on Sundays take advantage it saves you money but you need to get there early too.
public toilets difficult to locate when travelling
