Local Events

The spectacular Tour d'ile de Re Yacht Festival is held on 7th May; the Bordeaux Fete de Vin, a celebration of the region's most famous export runs from 1st to 4th July; Francofolies celebrates French music ans song at La Rochelle between 12th and 17th July, and the weekly Summer Music Festival is held at Pauillac from 22nd July to 26th August.

Out and about

Explore the charming harbour-side village of Loix en Ré on foot, by bicycle, by canoe or even horse-drawn carriage, located within walking distance of the parc. The small, traditional village of La Flotte is a short drive away, with narrow streets and pretty houses, and worth the trip for your souvenir from its popular market. Further afield is La Rochelle, with its aquarium, cathedral, restaurants and gardens, well worth a day out.

Park with exhibitions/information about Marine life and also a Park with hundreds of parrots and butterflies and different animals.

Musee Ernest Cognacq

The Hôtel de Clerjotte houses the most beautiful civil architecture of Île de Ré - the museum Ernest Cognacq - which is extending and modernising. From 2007, the renovated museum will offer a new museographic approach of the works of the great military engineer Vauban. Exhibition and conference rooms, documentation centre, educational service and bookshop will be open to the public.

Brandy distilleries

Visit the cognac distilleries of Martell and Hennessy. Most of the distilleries offer a tour explaining the process plus a free tasting.

Le Petit Train de Saint Trojan

Le Petit Train de St Trojan is a 12 km round trip through the surrounding countryside. In summer, there are special routes where you can view the sun rising over the horizon. Trains depart every 45 minutes in high season.

Le Marais-Poitevin

A large nature reserve with abundant wild life. Intersected by many canals and streams which can be explored by boat. The area also offers many museums, art galleries, activity parcs as well as cycle hire and horse riding.

Le Musée des Automates

This museum is the best of its kind in France displaying exquisite mechanical toys and figures made by masters of this craft. It contains both antique and modern pieces as well as several animated sets. Visitors also have the opportunity to learn about the mechanisms within the exhibits.

Local Directions

From La Rochelle: you need to be on the N237 following signs for the Laleo airport and Ile de Re. 500 yards after the airport turning, you reach the toll at the start of the Sablanceaux bridge. On arriving on the island follow signs to St Martin-de-re through the village of Le flotte. As you bypass St Martin-de-re go straight across the roundabout following signs for Le Courade. By pass La courade following signs to Ars-en-re. In the village of La Passe take the first exit sign posted Loix. Follow the road through salt marshes. As you come to the village of Loix turn right for Groin-, follow the road round the outskirts of Loix over 5 small roundabouts. As you exit the village take the left hand turning for camping les Ilates, campsite is 200 meters on the left hand side.
