Some great shops are in easy reach of the resort, as are 2 blue flag beaches and a good choice of restaurants - reached by car or bicycle. Here you're also just minutes away from the Pyrénées mountains, and just the other side is northern Spain, definitely worth a trip.

Attractions

The resort: Saint Vincent’s church, a historical monument, has the severe appearance of a defensive building: high walls, vertical buttresses, murder holes for muskets. Florénia Park with 180,000 m² of tiered gardens, where one can discover thousands of annual and perennial flowers during the course of a three kilometre walk with panoramic viewpoints and marvellous views. Urtubie Castle, which is furnished and inhabited, has belonged to the same family since its construction in 1341. This castle was extended and transformed in the 16th century. Louis XI stayed here in 1463, and its lands were made into a viscounty by Louis XIV in 1654. The surrounding area: The Basque coast: Bayonne (27.50 km) and the Vauban ramparts, Gothic cathedral, cloisters and Bonnat museum; Bidart (15 km) and the Chapel of St Mary Magdelene; Guéthary (12.50 km) and the Saraleguinea art museum; Anglet (23 km) and Chiberta lake; Saint-Jean-de-Luz (5 km) and the Grévin museum, the town square and visits to the house of Louis XIV and the house of the Infanta; Sare and the prehistoric caves; Hendaye (10 km) and the Abbadia estate; Biarritz (23 km) and the Imperial Chapel, the Chocolate Museum, St Martin’s Church, the History Museum, the Maritime Museum and its aquariums. In the Nive Valley: Cambo les Bains (the Edmond Rostand Museum), Bidarray (the pottock nature reserve), Louhossoa (weaving studios). Further afield, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (Bishop's Prisons, pottery of the Navarro region). Colourful and tasty gastronomy: Bayonne, Espelette and its Antton chocolate, Mauléon and Ossès (cheeses and duck foies gras), Sare and Villefranque for cakes, jams and tarts, the Irouleguy cellars in Saint-Etienne-de-Baïgorry.

Local Directions

From Paris: A6 and A10 until Bordeaux, then take the A63 motorway towards Bordeaux/Bayonne/San Sebastian. In Saint-Jean-de-Luz, take the exit 'sud' (south) N°2. On leaving the motorway, take the left fork towards Hendaye Plages San Sebastian on the D913. Go straight on for 1km. Go straight on at the first roundabout. At the second roundabout, turn left towards 'Hendaye plages' on the D912. The entrance to the Bordaberry Estate is on the left-hand side of the road.
