This coast is renowned for its fabulous sandy beaches. In the evening, head for Les Sables d’Olonne, half an hour’s drive to the south with promenade, bars and restaurants. The lovely resort of Bretignolles-sur-Mer, eight miles away, is home to Vendée Miniature.

Le Grand Parc du Puy du Fou

A reconstruction of an 18th century village with villagers in costume. The ruins of a 13th century chateau where you can watch a fabulous falconry display or see the Vikings at war. You can spend hours wandering the grounds and gardens. The evening show is an incredible open-air night show with 850 people and 50 horsemen.

Zoo des Sables d'Olonne

Only a short distance from the enormous Atlantic beaches, the zoo at Les Sables d'Olonne is the home to hundreds of animals living in a luxurious setting. Animals include penguins, monkeys, otters, lions, tigers and pandas.

Château de Talmont St Hilaire

Located on a rock, surrounded by water, the fortress of Talmont played an important part in the defense of Poitou against the invading Normans. Years later, several kings of France were made welcome along with Richard the Lion Heart during the crusade years. Nowadays you can attend medieval demonstrations during the festival period.

Oceanile

This waterpark in the heart of Noirmoutier is over 37000m and has more than 20 aquatic amusements. With slides and waves there is plenty to ensure that the whole family is entertained.

Le Vélo Rail

This journey through the countryside is on a 'vélo rail' which runs on old train lines. 10 kilometres of track can be explored for up to 4 hours.

Local Directions

From St. Gilles: Drive south from St.-Gilles in the direction of Les Sables d’Olonne on the D38. After a few miles and before reaching Brétignollessur-Mer, turn left towards La Chaize-Giraud (D12) passing through La Chaize-Giraud, take a left turn at the junction sign-posted LaMothe Achard. Continue until you reach the roundabout where you will follow signs for St Julien des Landes. Drive through the village and take the second turning on the left to ‘Martinet’ opposite. The campsite is situated a short distance along this road on the left.

About the region

From picturesque Bois de la Chaize to pine-fringed Sauveterre, there are enough wonderful beaches to try somewhere different each day of your holiday. Kids love the Planete Sauvage safari park near Nantes. Puy de Fou theme park and Oceanile water park is great for thrills. Chateau des Enigmes provides treasure hunt fun. With superb fishing, golf, miles of footpaths and cycle tracks, plus historic villages, there's plenty to do away from the beach.
