An attractive hilltop parc with an ideal location for exploring and an unrivalled view from the swimming pool.

Barco Reale is a small, attractive parc in an idyllic setting which makes it ideal for a relaxed, rustic holiday. Set on a steep Tuscan hilltop, close to the medieval town of Pistoia, it also offers spectacular views of the countryside that surrounds it. The parc has two lovely pools with a grassed area for sunbathing and a bar and restaurant with a terrace. The pizza and pasta here are so good that even the locals eat here! This is a super base when you want to sample the authentic Tuscan lifestyle - with gems like the cities of Florence and Lucca within easy reach, not to mention Pisa, with its famous leaning tower. Excursions are also arranged by the parc in high season.

If you're here at the right time, visit the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence from 30th April to 30th June, Italy's most famous festival; the Sesto D'Estate Music Festival in Monterspertoli from 28th May to 4th June, with its fabulous tastings.

Out and about

The popular Pistoia Zoo is a short drive from the parc and is a great family day out. Further afield in the town of Cecina is the Aqua Village water park. For culture buffs you're in a great location to visit some amazing cities, including Prato, Florence and Pisa.

Attractions

Parco di Pinocchio

The park of Pinocchio could not have been set anywhere other than in Collodi. The author adopted this village for his surname after spending most of his childhood here. Established over a span of 30 years, the park is far from being a traditional theme park, rather it is a creation of fantasy endowed with unique charm. Stroll along the paths and experience a living story amid unspoilt pearls of nature blended with beautiful art.

Pistoia Zoo

A few kilometres away from the centre of Pistoia, immersed in the hillside is this 75,000 square metre zoo. One of the most interesting zoological gardens in Italy both because of its position and the number of species gathered. Over 600 animals from around the globe including flamingos, llamas, camels, tigers, elephants, hippos and bears. There is also an area where children can touch the animals such as goats and rabbits.

Local Directions

From the A11 Motorway (Lucca – Florence), take the Pistoia exit. After the tollbooths, take the right fork towards Pistoia, and then at the crossroads take the right turn and follow signs for Lamporecchio up into the hills. Continue to follow signs for Lamporecchio, until you reach the village of San Baronto from where the campsite is signposted to the right. Go past the initial hairpin turn to the right signposted to the campsite for traffic approaching from the opposite direction. Just after the next corner the campsite is signposted to the right directly after a hotel. Follow this round up a small hill and round a tight corner. At the T-Junction turn left up a steep hill. Continue along this road along the side of the ridge and you will see the campsite on the left hand side.
