For endless unspoiled sand and surf, head to this fantastic oceanfront campsite on the Outer Banks. At this beautiful location, you can walk the miles of sandy beaches, hunt for shells, try to catch some bluefish and try to spot some dolphins that are often seen nearby.

If you head across this sliver of an island (it’s just a quarter-mile wide), you will come to Pamlico Sound, which is fantastic for windsurfing and kite-boarding. Aside from the beaches, there are many attractions to visit, including America’s tallest lighthouse at Cap Hatteras, known as "the Big Barber Pole", and the Wright Brothers National Memorial near Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills, where you can visit the monument celebrating where man first took flight.

Attractions

Cape Hatteras National Seashore

This is the first national seashore in the country and includes a combination of natural and historic attractions, such as lighthouses and lifesaving stations. Picnic, camping, and interpretive programs are offered seasonally at various locations. Open year round.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Known as 'the Big Barber Pole', Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the nation. At 208 feet tall, the lighthouse's warning light can be seen from 20 miles out to sea. From April to mid-October, visitors are welcome to climb the 268 steps to the top for a spectacular view of the national seashore.

Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

Established 70 years ago as a conservatory, the 6,000 acre reserve is home to more than 365 species of birds plus the endangered loggerhead sea turtles. Bring your camera; Pea Island is a shutterbug's and birdwatcher's paradise. Observation platforms are near the parking areas.

Shipwrecks - The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum

The waters of Hatteras are thought to hold one of the highest densities of shipwrecked vessels in the world. Thousands of ships and countless mariners all lost the same battle in the shores of the Outer Banks: the battle against piracy, war and the sea itself. This innovative museum is more than a collection of sunken ships and wayward dreams.

The Lost Colony

Experience the wonder of the New World as it is reenacted before your eyes in the nation's longest running outdoor drama. It's the story of 117 men, women and children settling the first colony on this country's shores. What happened next has become one of the oldest mysteries in America. With hard times ahead, the settlers sent one man back to England for supplies. He was unable to return for three years and when he did, they all had vanished. Written by Pulitzer Prizewinner Paul Green and performed under the stars at the beautiful Waterside Theatre, the show has thrilled over three million visitors since its debut in 1937. With its unique blend of drama, stirring music, energetic dance and dazzling costumes, The Lost Colony is the perfect vacation entertainment for your entire family.

North Carolina Aquariums

Located on Roanoke Island, at Pine Knoll Shores and Fort Fisher, the Aquariums were established in 1976 to promote an awareness, understanding, appreciation, and conservation of the diverse natural and cultural resources associated with North Carolina's ocean, estuaries, rivers, streams, and other aquatic environments.

Wright Brothers National Memorial

Visit the monument celebrating where man first took flight located near Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills. Containing a recently refurbished replica of the original Wright Flyer as well as other memorabilia of the First Flight, the Wright Brothers National Memorial and Visitor Center commemorates one of America's historic moments. A nearby sand dune supports the Memorial Pylon. On the extensive grounds around the visitor center/museum there are historical markers and a reconstructed hanger and shop.

REAL Watersports, Inc.

REAL Kiteboarding is North America's only 100% dedicated kiteboarding center. REAL is located in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, internationally recognized as the best place to kiteboard in the world.
