A fabulous pool complex nestled alongside spectacular coastline

The Gironde’s coastline is a coast of many colours - pristine and peaceful, or wild and remote. The choice is yours. There’s ancient forest and modern marinas - lively resorts and medieval towns. This family-friendly parc is close to a terrific beach, but you might find your days spend, instead, around its fantastic pool complex. From its Californian beach to the lazy river, via slides and slopes and an indoor pool, this is a parc for those who love to make a splash. Sports aren’t restricted to the wet variety though - there’s sports courts, a gym, lots of classes and lots of opportunities to work up a sweat in the sunshine (and dive into those pools later). Great kids’ clubs complete the picture at this recently renovated parc - with a Circus school for those desperate to hone their juggling skills. And who isn’t? Nights off colourful cabaret, or maybe just a circus show at your place?

This site is not suitable for Eurocamp. The pool complex is far too small for the size of site. We had to go to the beach every day.
Accommodation and courier were excellent.

First off, we had a bad experience; a week in, 3 of our hire bikes weren't where we left them and all that remained were the industrial strength chains which had been cut through. Despite having taken out the 'guarantee' of 2 euros a day per bike we had to pay a whopping 750 euros to cover the loss. So my advice would be to check your holiday insurance (Marks and Spencer DO NOT cover any loss/theft/damage etc to bikes whether hire or not) and check the deals that various hire companies around Palmyre offer.

On the courier, Jon's advice, we went straight to the campsite hire place that are part of a much bigger local operation. Whilst they did do a deal on the 3 mountain bikes and 2 other adult bikes and gave us 3 bikes for 3 days after the theft, I didn't research if their prices are competitive or not. Clearly, I would also recommend that you read the small print, if I hadn't taken out the additional guarantee then we would have been liable for 1,500 euro.

I reported the theft to the local police after leaving a couple of voicemails and a text for Jon as I didn't think my French would be up to it, but his phone wasn't working and we didn't see him until later that day, when he joked that he didn't think that his French would have been much help. For all of the next week there was a notice up at the Eurocamp reception with a different number, saying that he'd had technical issues. It seems a shame that Eurocamp are not able to provide their employees with a working phone, and we didn't see Jon again apart from a quick wave the day before we left. There were no instructions regarding checking out, apart from the cleaning notice on the back of the loo door.

Apart from that (we ate in a lot the second week due to lack of funds) what can I tell you?
This was our first stay with Eurocamp (in fact our first holiday for 14 years) so I can't comment on how this site compares. The mobile home was compact, but new and clean, basic kitchen equipment, but all good. The pillows are really thin, we all struggled with them, but black out blinds and air conditioning were great.

Space between the pitches is 6-8 feet, each deck faces the back of another home, meaning you have a nice view of the kitchen and loo of your neighbour. And of course the neighbour behind you has the same view, kitchen blinds were kept down and loo windows only open for necessary 'ventilation'.

Jon took about 30-40 minutes to arrive to show us our home, but to be fair we were early and he had to cycle up from Palmyre. He had some local knowledge, warned us that the French could be a bit odd and told us about various activities. His promised trip back next morning materialised after 1pm.

What we discovered for ourselves (and of course a holiday is about exploring but some of this would have been useful...):

There is a Lidl in Royan, (about a 20 mins drive) but there is also an Aldi in Avers, much. The Spar in Les Mathes seemed expensive to me, but we did buy a couple of wine boxes, so perhaps it was those.....

The Carrefour in Palmyre is good especially the meat counter but it does get very busy- there is also a Casino (supermarket). There was a market on Sunday taking up most of the car park(not sure if every week?) which meant parking was impossible.

The campsite shop is well stocked, but you will pay premium, eg 1 euro for a baguette as oppose to 70c in Carrefour.

Guys of any age, you will need skimpies for the pool complex, this is French health and safety. Get used to it. The complex is good, but our kids 13, 16 & 17 did find it a bit junior, this isn't a criticism, it's great for younger ones.

The washing machines at the campsite only take tokens which are available from the information point. The information point also has good maps of the local area.

We cycled to beaches most days, the ones around town were very sheltered so we went round to the one near Club Med, and also up to Coup de Phadre (where the bikes went missing). The second is on the Cote Sauvage and has much bigger surf, amazing dunes.

We also visited Isle d'Oleron (just the Chateau) and La Tremblade, very picturesque I wish we'd been able to eat there. The whole area is devoted to shell fish farming so oysters and mussels are abundant.

We ate out a couple of times, Le Golfy was a birthday treat and didn't disappoint: good burgers, home made pasta and sauce, Tuna Carpaccio and a shell fish special. They offer a menu in English, but the shellfish platter was only on the French menu.

Food at the campsite was good, but you will need to book.
