With a huge choice of ferry operators and routes – not to mention Eurotunnel - taking your car to the continent has never made more sense. Channel crossings can be booked online as part of a package, and don’t worry about driving abroad if it’s your first time – we can help you with our recommended ferry and driving routes to help you hit the open road en route to Côte D’Argent.
Hourtin Plage is situated due south of Royan, across the Gironde estuary. There is a regular car ferry crossing across the estuary from Royan to Le Verdon and this will shorten the drive time. The ferry crossing takes about 20 minutes. The alternative route is to drive down to Bordeaux and approach the site from the south.
Sailing into the western channel port of St Malo will give you the shortest drive in France. Brittany Ferries operate daily sailings from Portsmouth to St Malo - this is an overnight sailing normally departing at 8:15pm with a sailing time of approximately 12 hours.
The return crossing from St Malo to Portsmouth is normally a mid morning sailing, in order to catch this you will need a stopover close to port. Our parcs Château de Galinée and Domaine des Ormes are both within easy driving distance of St Malo.
The western channel port of Caen Ouistreham offers a much greater choice of day and night sailings, with varied sailing lengths. From Caen you can head south to Le Mans then cut across to the coast via Angers or Poitiers.
If you prefer the short sea crossing from Dover to Calais, or the Eurotunnel, the drive will take you via Rouen, Le Mans, Tours and Poitiers - it's a long journey so you might wish to break your journey with an overnight stop in Normandy or at a parc in the Loire Valley. Alternatively, take the more southerly route from Calais and indulge in a city break in Paris - see the sights or even visit Disneyland® Paris.
- Please note your accommodation on parc is available from 3pm on your day of arrival.
- France has introduced driving restrictions in Paris and some other cities; a Crit'Air sticker should be displayed or you may be fined. Click here for more details.
- Don't forget the time difference! Europe is 1 hour ahead of UK time.
- More time on the ferry or more time on the road? When comparing the different route options, do remember to allow for motorway tolls and fuel costs.
- Quick converter: 50 miles is just over 80km.
