Amiens is the capital of the Somme department in Picardy. It is home to the largest cathedral in France – the Cathedrale de Notre Dame. Amiens has beautiful flower-lined canals; it is beautiful, town not to be missed.

Something fishy going on? Boulogne-sur-Mer is the largest fishing port in France and the Chamber of Commerce organise guided tours of the Capécure where fish is auctioned, frozen, salted and smoked.

Chantilly Races

If you are a lover of all things equine then Chantilly is the place to go (50 Km north of Paris). The Hippodrome de Chantilly hosts two of France’s classic horse races - the Prix du Jockey Club and the Prix de Diane Longines every year in June. But if you don’t fancy a flutter then you can always visit the local horse museum, ‘La Musée Vivant du Cheval’, which offers demonstrations three times per day.

Events, International Festival of Giants and Masks, Saumur

International Festival of Giants and Masks

The International Festival of Giants and Masks occurs every two years in Douai; the giants festival occurs on even years and on odd years it is the International Festival of Military Bands. There is music, parades, and of course, incredible giants and masks. The main event is the parade of the Gayant Family on the Sunday afternoon when Gayant, his wife Marie Cagenon and their 3 children roam the streets of the city accompanied by musical groups and street artists.

Foire aux Fromages

A festival for food-lovers, this huge celebration of cheese takes place each September. Hosted by the town of La Capelle; the fair features literally thousands of different types of cheese. Cheese producers come from all over the country to share their wares and take part in competitions. If you're staying nearby, this is a great place to stock up your fridge with some of the finest French cheeses around. 2018 dates to be confirmed.
