Holidays in the north of France
Where France meets the waves of la Manche (that’s the English Channel to us!) the coast is lined with some of the country’s most enjoyable resorts. The Celtic fringe of Brittany is where you’ll find rugged coves, charming Belle Epoque villas at Dinard and the family-friendly sands of Saint-Briac-sur-Mer.
Normandy’s smart tourist resort of Houlgate and the effortlessly fashionable Deauville are both close to the wide, flat, seemingly endless sands of the D-Day landing beaches and the the hauntingly poignant WWII museums. The walled citadel of Saint Malo and the fairytale pinnacles of Mont Saint-Michel mark the Normandy coast out for days spent soaking up the area’s turbulent, passionate history.
Head inland to savour a slower (and more indulgent) pace of life. You’ll be buckled into France’s dairy belt, ready to discover where the country’s creamiest cheeses are produced. Enjoy a slice served with a flagon of crisp Breton cider and you’ll soon find more reasons to linger in the beautiful north.
To the west, the Vendée is a land of traditional holiday resorts facing the wide horizons of the Atlantic, and enjoying some of the best beaches in the whole of France.
