Camping in Austria
Why we love holidays in Austria
You’ve seen the film - nuns, music, curtains for clothes. But Austria’s even better than that (if that’s possible)! Think dramatic alpine peaks, pristine glacial lakes and sun-dappled forest trails, combining to create the perfect backdrop for unforgettable outdoor-style holidays.
With its valleys home to medieval villages and crystal-clear swimming spots, Austria's a summer-ready and special backdrop for truly magical family holidays. Even if you don’t climb every mountain (sorry, we had to, didn’t we?).

Our favourite things to do in Austria

Fun days out
Adventures don’t get much bigger than those at the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier in Salzburgerland. Looking for snowy pursuits in mid summer? This is your place. Add panoramic viewing platforms and hearty meals, and you can easily spend a day up here.
The Styrian Open-Air Museum near St. Peter am Kammersberg showcases traditional Austrian rural life with interactive exhibits and demonstrations in English. For medieval marvels, Hohenwerfen Castle near Zell am See stands dramatically on a rocky outcrop, complete with falconry displays and authentic dungeons to explore.
Don't miss the Murau Adventure Park in Styria—a thrilling forest course with ziplines and climbing elements that will delight children and you too, if you’re brave enough…

Getting active
From gentle kayaking on the mirror-like waters of Lake Zell to cycling along the riverside paths of the Enns Valley in Styria, Austria delivers endless possibilities for family-friendly outdoor activities.
The country is like one huge open-air adventure zone. Hike through the flower-strewn alpine meadows of St. Peter am Kammersberg and discover hidden mountain huts and abundant wildlife—channel your inner Sound of Music audition and wander the hills and trails.
Horse riding through the verdant valleys around Murau is wonderfully scenic too. Wild swimming has really taken off here, and we get it—the refreshing waters and beach areas along Lake Altaussee in Styria and the crystal-clear Krimml Waterfall pools in Salzburgerland are pure bliss. And yes, there's that summer snow we mentioned above: summer skiing, snowboarding and sledding are all possible on the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier.

Cultural hotspots
A wander through the historic centre of Zell am See, with its medieval buildings clustered around the 16th-century parish church, is a must. Take time to explore the lakeside promenades and cobbled squares showcasing traditional Austrian architecture. Discover the rich ironwork heritage at the Styrian Iron Trail museum in Murau, with hands-on exhibits for children.
The Medieval Summer Festival at Hohenwerfen Castle features knights' tournaments and artisans dressed in period costumes, where children can try their hands at making mysterious scrolls and spells to bring out their inner Harry Potter wizardry.
The Murau Brewery Museum reveals centuries of brewing traditions with interactive displays and taste-testing experiences. Why not, Austrian exploits are thirsty work!
Our favourite things to see in Austria

Historic sites
The magnificent Schloss Trautenfels in Styria sits on a rocky spur surrounded by snowy mountains. It’s quite the sight (and site!), with its striking white façade and jagged peaks behind. Within, the castle offers a fairy-tale experience as you explore its Renaissance halls and impressive art collection.
Kaprun Castle, strategically positioned in Salzburgerland, provides insight into Austria's feudal past with its medieval architecture and fascinating exhibits. The pilgrimage church of Maria Kirchental, nestled in an idyllic alpine setting near Zell am See, allows you to experience centuries of spiritual heritage and boasts spectacular frescoes.
The archaeological site of Friesach near St. Peter am Kammersberg reveals well-preserved medieval fortifications too. There is a surprising array of wonders in these two regions.

Cities worth seeing
Zell am See, the undisputed jewel of Salzburgerland, embraces its spectacular lakeside setting with the impressive pedestrian-only Stadtplatz at its heart. We especially love the waterfront promenades - so we recommend you head here first and get your bearings.
Head to the cable car for trips up the city’s own mountain – the Schmittenhöhe. Murau in Styria has an incredibly well-preserved medieval centre housing craft shops, tempting cafes (Austria does coffee and cake like few other countries. It‘s elevated to an art form here) and panoramic views of the surrounding alpine landscapes.
We also adore St. Peter am Kammersberg's quintessential Austrian village ambiance and woodcraft heritage, and Schladming's attractive town centre offers a great afternoon’s amble.

Natural wonders
The emerald waters of Lake Zell and Lake Altaussee are cupped by the towering mountains, creating breathtaking reflections, jumping off points for leisurely boat cruises, or pitstops for picnics.
Take a day to explore the scenic Enns Valley, which forms a pristine ecosystem that’s typically Austrian: with its meandering river and lush meadows offering some of Austria's most serene scenery and gentle hiking trails.
Bikes are welcome too: but you can only explore the full valley on foot. Krimml Waterfalls' thundering cascades—Europe's highest—are simply magical, dropping in three dramatic stages.
