Lake Annecy Holidays
The playground of the French Alps
Shimmering beneath the cauldron of dramatic Alpine peaks and blessed with Europe's cleanest waters, Annecy combines natural splendour with medieval wonder, and we love it. The ancient town, with its winding canals and flower-adorned bridges, appears to float above Annecy’s crystal-clear waters, fed by those Alpine mountain springs. What makes Lake Annecy particularly special is its perfect blend of outdoor activities and cultural heritage, where morning paddle boarding can be followed by afternoon strolls through the Old Town's centuries-old streets and arcaded walkways.
The lake's pristine waters reflect the surrounding mountains, creating a stunning backdrop for both relaxation and adventure. What we particularly love about Annecy is how it manages to be both a world-class outdoor destination and a living museum of French heritage, where you can cycle the lake's perimeter in the morning (maybe not all of it, but you can give it your best shot) and explore a 12th-century château in the afternoon.
Is Lake Annecy for you?

Fun things to do in Lake Annecy
Water adventures
The lake offers every water activity imaginable, from swimming at multiple lakeside beaches to paddle boarding, sailing, and water skiing. The water is so clear you can see fish swimming beneath your boat, and in summer, the temperature is perfect for long, refreshing dips.
Old Town exploration
Wander through Annecy's Vieille Ville, where medieval buildings house artisan shops and cafés. The Palais de l'Isle, a 12th-century prison turned museum sitting on a triangular island, is the town's most photographed landmark. The covered arcades and colourful flower boxes create a fairy-tale atmosphere.
Outdoor activities
Cycle some of the 40km flat path around the lake, hike in the surrounding mountains, or paraglide from Col de la Forclaz for spectacular views. The lake's microclimate means you can enjoy outdoor activities almost year-round.
Our favourite
Take an evening promenade along the Jardins de l'Europe as the sun sets behind the mountains, then find a lakeside restaurant in the Old Town for lake fish specialties and local wine. Annecy somehow becomes even more magical at the end of another perfect day!
Day trips from Lake Annecy
Chamonix and Mont Blanc are just over an hour away, offering world-class mountain experiences (and year round snow) and the famous Aiguille du Midi cable car. The elegant spa town of Aix-les-Bains provides thermal relaxation, while the cheese-making village of Thônes offers a taste of authentic Savoyard life.
Geneva is within easy reach for international shopping and lakeside sophistication. For nature lovers, the Aravis mountains provide excellent hiking in summer and skiing in winter. The Semnoz mountain, overlooking Annecy, offers panoramic views and family-friendly activities year-round.

If you like Lake Annecy, you might like
Rougemont, Jura

We love this gem of a French mountain village, offering a quieter alternative to Annecy's lakeside bustle. With its traditional architecture, excellent hiking trails, and renowned cheese-making heritage, it provides an authentic taste of French mountain life.
Lake Como

Italy's most glamorous lake shares Annecy's combination of mountain scenery and historic charm, though on a grander scale (although more relaxed than Lake Garda). Like Annecy, it expertly blends outdoor activities with cultural heritage magically!
Interlaken

Nestled between Lakes Thun and Brienz, this Swiss resort town matches Annecy's outdoor spirit with its stunning Alpine setting and wealth of activities. Like Annecy, Interlaken serves as a perfect base for both water sports and mountain adventures, with the added drama of the Jungfrau region's peaks.
